What is the simplest way to cut my hair without shaving it bald?

i am tired of having to make appointments with my barber, so i decided to buy a machine, and my hair is really nothing special, i would like to maybe cut it on the top with a 4 or 5, not too short not too long, but then the difficulties i think are gonna arise when i do my "fade" , i want to cut it on the sides with like a 1, what is the easiest way to do my "fade" ??? a low fade at that ....not very high????my old barber used to use a combo of a big comb and machine to do my fade, but i went to this other guy recently who seemed to do my fade with ease using the JUST THE MACHINE, what is the easiest technique you guys recommend to do my own fade??use a 1, 2 or 3, and go a certain distance to the top of my head???? you know stuff like that...thanks In advance for any help......

try from behind the ears then if you make a mistake you wont see it the if you want to take it higher you can do so. dont use a comb though. if you do the top at a 4 then have the sides at a 2 maybe 1 depending on how much you want it faded
