I've been growing my hair out for over a year and now need a style that fits me. Where to start

I'm a man who has always had very short hair. Last November I decided to let it go until I couldn't take it anymore - and that time is now. It's about 7 inches in length, full, thick with A LOT of body. If I wash it, comb it, let it dry it turns into an afro!

My barber won't be of help, and I want to know exactly what I want before I approach anyone else considering how long its taken me to get here.

A place of pictures, ideas for my hair type, what looks good for certain faces etc. would be a HUGE help. Thanks!
